Marc Mitchell, MD, MS, Founder and President


Marc is a pediatrician and management specialist who has worked in over 35 countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America on the design and delivery of health care services. He is a Lecturer on International Health at Harvard University School of Public Health where his areas of expertise include health management, health systems design, program development and evaluation. He has done training and consulting for a wide variety of organizations including the US Government (USAID, CDC and NIH), the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, The African Development Bank, the National Health Service in the UK, PricewaterhouseCoopers, the United Nations (UNFPA, WHO), and private foundations and organizations. His research interests focus on the use of electronic standard medical protocols to increase access to high quality health care for the world’s poor. Dr. Mitchell holds degrees from Harvard University (BA, 1970), Boston University (MD, 1974), and MIT’s Sloan School of Management (MS, 1985).

Molly Bogan, MA, Director of Administration and Finance

Molly started her career in health with several years working in clinics and outreach programs serving diverse populations in Washington State. She went on to serve two years in the US Peace Corps assisting local government with the decentralization of health services planning and provision in Paraguay and started working with D-tree as a Program Manager in Tanzania in 2008. Molly holds a BA in International Relations from the Evergreen State College and a Master’s degree in International Development and Global Health Affairs from the Korbel School of International Studies at University of Denver. Previous to joining D-tree, Molly worked with a USAID-funded international health program at Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

Steve Ollis, MBA, Chief Operating Officer


Steve is D-tree’s Chief Operating Officer with over 14 years experience in management consulting, information technology and public health. Steve holds a Bachelor’s degree in Finance from The American University and a Master’s in Business Administration in Information Systems and Finance from the University of Maryland. He is also a certified Project Management Professional. Prior to joining D-tree, Steve worked for the Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative in Tanzania directing programs in Pediatrics, Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV, and rural Care and Treatment.

Alison Clark, MS, Finance and Administration Officer

Alison Clark
Alison brings over eight years of nonprofit experience to D-tree. She has worked in a variety of capacities including finance and accounting, marketing, grant writing and the facilitation and training of corporate and nonprofit professional groups in leadership and team building programs. She is a graduate of Salve Regina University and holds a Master’s of Science in Management from the SIT Graduate Institute, through the Program of Intercultural Service, Leadership and Management. Prior to joining the D-tree team as Finance and Administration Officer in the US, Alison was the Accounting Manager at an Outward Bound school in Boston. She is an avid traveler and passionate about improving health care in underserved communities.

    Tanzania Country Team

Lucy Fulgence Silas, MBA, Tanzania Country Director

Lucy Fulgence Silas, is a specialized project and research manager with a BSc in Biology and a MBA in Health Care Management. Lucy returned to Tanzania after her studies in the United States to continue working on HIV research and project administration. Prior to joining D-Tree Lucy was working with Project Accept-Tanzania. Her passion is improving health care in underserved communities.

Gayo Mhila, BSc IT, Field Operations Manager

Gayo is a Field Operations Manager in D-tree’s Tanzania country office. Gayo holds a Bachelor’s in Science in Information Technology from Uganda Christian University. His interests lay in applying his technical knowledge and computer skills to social issues. Previously, Gayo has worked on field data collection technologies in East Africa with the TIST program, including seven years design experience in handheld, PC and web-based data systems. He is currently supervising a team of field coordinators focused on piloting CommCare software to assist home-based HIV care providers who work at the community level in Tanzania.

Melania Nkaka, CNM, DSS, Field Coordinator

Melania is a registered nurse and certified midwife who also holds a diploma in Social Studies from the College of Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial Academy. Previous to joining the D-tree, she worked as a nurse at Bugando Medical Centre in the Mwanza Region of Tanzania and at AMREF as an HIV Project Health Researcher Officer. Melania is currently a Field Coordinator with D-tree International in Tanzania, working on the introduction of mobile technology to assist health workers to provide HIV care, antenatal, postnatal and neonatal care in clinical settings, as well as assisting with qualitative and quantitative research.

Joachim Mangilima, BS, IT Field Implementer

Joachim holds a Bachelor of Science in computer science from the University of Dar es Salaam. Prior to joining D-tree, Joachim has worked on various projects using technologies such as Ruby and Ruby on Rails for organizations such as Amani Children’s Home and Saint Luke Foundation, both located in Moshi, Tanzania. His interests lay in applying technology to add value to and assist disadvantaged communities to take advantage of the opportunities made available by advances in technology so as to improve their standard of living. He currently works as an IT Field Coordinator for D-tree International in Tanzania, supporting several programs providing support to a program serving chronically ill patients and orphans and vulnerable children.

Mariam Mapande, CIT, Field Implementer

Mariam is Field Implementer in D-tree’s Tanzania Country office. Mariam holds Certificates in Computing and Information Technology at University Computing Center, as well as certifications in Procurement and Supplies management stage II and Certificate in International Computing. Previous to joining D-tree, Mariam worked as a secretary at Chanto Investment Co. in Dar es Salaam and at Pathfinder International in Tanzania, assisting both with community health Data entry projects and training community health workers on how to use data collection tools. Mariam is current working as an implementer on the introduction of mobile technology to assist community health workers to provide home-based TB and HIV care.

Jalia I Tibaijuka, Field Nursing Officer

Jalia holds a Diploma in Nursing and the Advanced Diploma in Nursing Ophthalmology from Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center. She also received training in HIV/AIDS care in the community from South Chelsea College in London UK. Previous to joining D-tree, Jalia worked for years as a Nurse at Muhimbili National Hospital. Her interest is to assist D-tree and work as part of a team to improve health care in the Community, with a particular focus on severe acute malnutrition diagnosis and treatment programs for children on Zanzibar.

Peter Dotto, Field Implementer

Peter holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science from the University of Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania. Prior to joining D-tree international, Peter worked with Sura Technologies, Assurance ICT and the University of Dar-es-Salaam as a Software Developer developing web based Applications. Peter also has experience working on the design and development of a Maternal and Child Care System. His passion is to use his professional experience, education and ability to the better his society. Peter is currently working as Field Implementer at D-tree international, providing both computer programming and training of mobile application users.

Grace Yesse Mshana, Field Nursing Officer

Grace Yesse Mshana currently serves as field nursing officer for D-tree in Tanzania. Previous to joining D-tree, Grace worked with BRAC Tanzania as an area health coordinator. She was also a medical representative with MEPHA and a consultant to the Al Hilal Dispensary. Grace holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition from the Sokoine University of Agriculture in Tanzania, and a Diploma in clinical medicine from Kibaha Clinical Officer Training College. Grace’s professional interested lay in improving the health of the community.

    Malawi Country Team

Marije Geldof, PhD, Field Coordinator

Marije works as Field Coordinator for D-Tree in Malawi. She holds a M.Sc. in Artificial Intelligence from the Free University Amsterdam and a PhD in Human Geography from Royal Holloway, University of London, which explored the role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in the lives of low-literate youth in Ethiopia and Malawi. Marije has over 5 years of experience with the project management and implementation of European Union funded projects and prior to joining D-Tree she worked as a postdoctoral research fellow on a DFID-funded systematic review about the impact of ICT4D partnerships on poverty reduction.

    Supporting Parties

Bethany Hedt, PhD, Biostatistician

Bethany is a graduate of the Biostatistics Program at Harvard School of Public Health with a variety of international experience. After completing her undergraduate degree in mathematics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Bethany served two years as a math and science teacher with the Peace Corps in Namibia. She extended her time for a year in Namibia as an HIV Coordinator for the Ministry of Education (Ondangwa-West Region). During her time working towards her PhD, she spent one year as an ASPH/CDC Global Health Fellow in Malawi as a HIV Strategic Information technical assistant. Her thesis, Novel Methods for Efficient Surveillance and Monitoring, introduces less intensive and less expensive methodologies to collect and analyze data to support data-driven program management. She is currently doing research and teaching at Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health.

Brian DeRenzi, PhD Candidate, Fellow and Consultant

Brian is a Ph.D. student in the Computer Science & Engineering Department at the University of Washington, where his research focuses on designing and deploying appropriate and sustainable technologies for healthcare in low-income countries. With a B.S. in computer engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a M.S. in computer science from the University of Washington for his work with human-computer interaction, Brian has experience with mobile and embedded devices at hardware, software and usability levels. He has worked on the development and testing of electronic IMCI protocols with D-tree in Tanzania (see article) and was a Fulbright Scholar focused on developing mobile protocols for use by community health workers in Tanzania.
