D-tree International, along with partners Etisalat, Qualcomm, and Great Connection Inc., won two awards in February at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The team was awarded the “mWomen Best Mobile Product or Service for Women in Emerging Markets” and “Best Mobile Health Innovation” prizes, both for the Etisalat Mobile Baby application. Mobile Baby is a unique maternal health program which helps to provide critical healthcare to pregnant women in rural parts of Africa that is currently being deployed in Tanzania, Nigeria, UAE and Saudi Arabia.

D-tree’s work on electronic protocols to improve child health in Tanzania was featured in the January/February 2012 issue of Fogarty International Center’s newsletter Global Health Matters.

D-tree has been awarded catalytic grant funding by the Innovation Working Group, part of the UN Secretary-General’s Every Woman Every Child effort, and the mHealth Alliance. The grant, funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), is meant to foster innovative use of mobile technology to advance maternal and newborn health. D-tree’s grant will be used to roll out a mobile application to improve the diagnosis and treatment of severe acute malnutrition in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

Several members of D-tree’s team from around the world presented at the 2011 mHealth Summit, held December 5-7 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Washington DC. The Summit connected leaders in government, private sector, academia and not-for-profit organizations to advance discussion and decision-making related to the intersection of mobile technology, health research, and policy.
